About Sarah

Sarah Louise Hyde (1947-2007) was an educator, artist, mother and wife who lived in the DC area most of her life, traveled extensively, and lived in Takoma Park, Maryland from 1985 until her death from brain cancer in 2007. Her artistic career included many shows in DC, collaborations with dance companies, and a significant accolade from an icon of American art, Alice Neal, in 1983.

Sarah was on the faculty of the Corcoran Gallery School of Art, and had a Ph.D in Art and Philosophy from NYU. She also was well known around Takoma Park as the founder of the Allegheny Learning Center, a pre-school operated out of her home on Allegheny Avenue.

After a 14-year hiatus from active studio work, she was heading back into the studio in 1999 when she was diagnosed with brain cancer and became disabled from the treatments.

The works shown here, which had remained in storage in her studio in Takoma Park, are now mounted and preserved. Most of them are on public view for the first time. They are a visual remembrance and memorial to her energy, creativity and enthusiasm.
